Beyond the Bid Card

Article

Steffes Auctioneers has been at the forefront of the auction industry for over 65 years. A lot has changed since the early days of standing in the bed of a pickup truck, bid calling to a crowd that gathered to truly make it a community event. While the style and delivery may have changed, the live auction process remained mostly unchanged for decades. Then something happened, COVID.

During COVID, conducting a live auction became challenging with all the mandated rules in place. It just didn’t carry the same vibe that we cherished deeply, connecting with people. As restrictions continued to tighten, our hand was forced to transition to a pure online experience.

Thankfully, here at Steffes Auctioneers, we had enough foresight to understand the future. While our intent was never to replace live sales, the industry had other plans, even after COVID had come and gone. Our online bidding platform continued to serve our customers well, as the idea of a live sale somehow became an afterthought for many.

To continue serving our customers effectively, we had to evolve to remain relevant as everyone was moving online. We hadn’t lost sight of those who had come to trust our platform, scrolling it daily to see new items that may have come up for auction. You see, it wasn’t just Steffes Auctioneers evolving; you, too, were on this journey with us, and together we’ve pioneered a new normal for auctions.

Technology is always evolving, and it has never been faster than it is today. The platforms that were successful even 5 years ago simply couldn’t scale efficiently with the increased bidder demand. Because of this, we started charting our path to a new experience, and in the summer of 2024, we released the next evolution of steffesgroup.com.

While the initial release was met with mixed reviews, regardless of opinion, we were on this journey together. Over the last year, we’ve continued listening to our customers, developing features and functionalities that were only possible because you shared your perspectives.

Here at Steffes Auctioneers, we see our evolution as a partnership with our customers. We’ve been able to advance a platform together that provides improved bidding, expanded categories, and a mobile-first approach. We’ve been able to reach wider audiences that have served our sellers well. More bidders mean more competition, which has translated to higher selling prices. We’ve streamlined the mobile experience to provide you as a bidder, with even more information. We integrated higher-quality pictures, which meant a better representation of equipment condition, something that we take seriously. These combine to help you make better-informed bidding decisions

We believe that by developing our own auction platform in-house, we have the adaptability required to continue our evolution as our customers change how they want to engage in online auctions. We’ve adopted technologies that scale as required and provide a solid platform upon which we will continue to innovate.

As we look to the future, there are so many opportunities to provide more information at your fingertips faster than ever before. Our goal is to continue being a thought leader in the auction space and deliver experiences that enhance the way you buy or sell, regardless of whether it’s a tractor, a combine, an excavator, or even acres of land. It’s with you, our partner, that we can change entire industries together, not for the sake of change itself, but for the sake of delivering a better service.

From the bed of a pickup truck to a digital-first world, one thing hasn’t changed- our commitment to creating opportunities for every buyer and seller.
