Why Technology Has Expanded Opportunities—Not Replaced Relationships

Article

For more than 65 years, Steffes Auctioneers has helped farmers, construction companies, landowners and businesses achieve the best possible outcomes through auctions. During that time, one thing has remained constant: our job is to serve our clients and customers in whatever way creates the greatest value for them. That's exactly why we embraced online auctions long before much of the industry did.

Many people assume online auctions replaced traditional auctions. The reality is much different. At Steffes, we continue to conduct successful live, in-person auctions across the country. But years ago, we recognized that many of our customers wanted another option—one that made participation easier while expanding the pool of qualified buyers. Online auctions weren't about replacing tradition. They were about giving sellers access to more buyers and buyers more opportunities to participate in the auction process.

Why Online Auctions Have Become So Popular

Agriculture has always been built on relationships, but today's buyers and sellers also expect convenience. Farmers are managing operations, running businesses and balancing busy schedules. Buyers may be hundreds—or even thousands—of miles away. Online bidding allows them to participate without sacrificing valuable time. Instead of traveling several hours to attend a single auction, buyers can review equipment, research assets and place bids from wherever they are. That convenience has significantly increased participation while helping sellers reach a much larger audience.

More Buyers Create Better Opportunities for Sellers

One of the biggest advantages of online auctions isn't simply convenience. It's reach.
At Steffes Auctioneers, we invest heavily in digital marketing, targeted advertising, email marketing, direct mail, search optimization and buyer outreach to ensure the right people know when an auction is taking place. Our auction platform allows us to connect sellers with qualified buyers across North America—and in many cases, internationally.  For specialized equipment, that's a significant advantage.

Online Auctions Don't Mean Less Personal Service

One common misconception is that online auctions remove the personal experience. We believe just the opposite. Every successful auction still starts with people. Our team spends time understanding each seller's goals, evaluating assets, developing marketing strategies and helping determine the best auction format. Technology supports that process—it doesn't replace it. Customers still work with experienced auction professionals who understand agriculture, equipment values and local markets. And current market trends.

We Still Conduct Live, In-Person Auctions

Live auctions remain an important part of our business. Certain situations benefit tremendously from the excitement and energy that only an in-person auction can create. Estate settlements, retirement auctions, community events and large farm dispersals often attract significant local attendance and create a unique atmosphere that many customers value. For many sellers, a live auction continues to be the best solution.  For others, online—or even a combination of both—may deliver the strongest results.  Our role is to recommend the approach that best fits each situation.

Why Steffes Adopted Online Auctions Early

Our decision wasn't driven by technology. It was driven by listening. Years ago, customers began asking for more flexibility. They wanted greater convenience. They wanted more buyers. They wanted broader exposure for their equipment and land. And Covid pushed us to adapt and build. Today, that investment allows us to combine decades of auction experience with modern marketing strategies that help connect sellers with highly qualified buyers.

Frequently Asked Questions About Online Agricultural Auctions

Are online farm auctions trustworthy?

Yes. Reputable auction companies use secure bidding platforms, detailed auction terms and experienced auction professionals to ensure a transparent process. Buyers can review listings, ask questions and participate confidently from virtually anywhere.

Are online auctions better than live auctions?

Neither format is inherently better. The best choice depends on the assets being sold, the seller's goals and the target buyer audience.

Many successful auctions today use either live, online or a combination of both. An experienced auction company can recommend the approach that will generate the strongest results.

Do online auctions attract more buyers?

Often, yes. Online auctions remove geographic barriers, allowing qualified buyers from across the country—and sometimes internationally—to compete for assets.

This expanded reach can increase bidding activity and create stronger outcomes for sellers.

Can you still inspect equipment before an online auction?

Absolutely. Most online auctions include inspection opportunities, detailed photos, videos and comprehensive descriptions so buyers can make informed decisions before bidding.

What types of assets are sold through online auctions?

Online auctions are commonly used for:

  • Farm equipment

  • Construction equipment

  • Transportation assets

  • Livestock equipment

  • Real estate and farmland

  • Business assets

  • Industrial equipment

  • Estate assets

Choosing the Right Auction Partner Matters

Whether an auction takes place online, in person or through a hybrid approach, success depends on far more than the bidding platform.

It requires strategic marketing, experienced auction professionals, accurate asset presentation and a trusted reputation built over decades.  At Steffes Auctioneers, we combine all of those elements to help sellers reach the right buyers and maximize results.

Technology has changed how auctions can be conducted.  Our commitment to serving customers has never changed.  If you're considering selling equipment, farmland or business assets, our team can help determine the auction strategy that's right for your situation.
