Steffes Group had the privilege of selling a 154 acre farm homesteaded in Fulton County, IL, that has been in the Stout family since 1835. “I don’t believe I have ever had the opportunity to sell a farm that has NEVER BEEN FOR SALE… EVER”, Tim Meyer, manager at the Mt. Pleasant, IA Steffes Group.

The sellers are David Smallwood and Candice Horn, a brother and sister who spent many summers as children at their Uncle Gordon Stout’s farm. As David told the story...

Mother and Father would take us over to Uncle Gordon’s and drop us off for 2-3 weeks at a time during the summer. We had so many great times on this farm. When it was time to go home, which was a day we always dreaded, mom and dad would come over to pick us up on Sunday after church. We would fix a great big fried chicken dinner for everyone and eat before we headed home. I can still smell the fried chicken and other fresh foods, off the farm, cooking.

Gordon had no children and when he passed, 15 years ago, he left the farm to two kids who made many memories with him over his lifetime. The family, including kids and grandkids, would set up campers around the pond on holiday weekends where they spent time fishing, sat around bonfires, rode ATV’s, and made memories with anyone who was able to attend.

With David and Candice in their 70’s, they felt it was time to sell the land because they could no longer travel the two hours to mow grass, manage crops, and care for the property properly. Both were very excited to find the new buyers are brothers with plans to farm the land and continue to enjoy the land as David and Candice had done for so many years.
